Recently I was reminiscing and started to look round the internet to see what there might be with sites that contained any history of camping in the UK, particularly in the heyday of the 1960's and 1970's when due in part to the austerity of the time camping became a very very popular low cost way of having an enjoyable family holiday.
I found very little on the internet, so decided I should start putting a website together as camping had been so much a part of our family life and then as my first employment. I worked for Casey's Camping from 1970 to 1972 and their subsidiary Adventure Sports Manufacturing in Bristol.

My earliest memories are from when I was a quite a small child growing up in the 1950's. The idea of camping always fascinated me, especially when I found my father's old scout tent in the basement of our house, along with his methylated spirit camping stove. I persuaded my parent's that my sister and I should sleep out overnight in our back garden. It was later that evening that I discovered what a nuisance daddy longlegs can be and how cold it can get at night. We had no sleeping bags and our back garden was on a slope, we made our beds the wrong way round, then changed that, had difficulty with our feet slipping down the hill outside the tent as there was no built in groundsheet. We ended up returning into the house at some point during the night, waking up my father who was always a light sleeper and returning to the comfort of our beds!
My father and grandfather are in this photo as well as uncles & aunts - what a bold weekend adventure..! The weather forecast must have been good!
